Toronto opens first cannabis shop six months after legalization
Freezing temperatures didn’t stop about 40 people from lining up outside the first legal cannabis store to open in Canada’s largest city, nearly six months after the country legalized recreational pot.
Eager buyers were waiting by the time The Hunny Pot Cannabis Co., owned by real estate agent Hunny Gawri, opened its doors at 9 a.m. Monday.
Caryma Sa’d camped outside the store on Toronto’s trendy Queen Street West starting at midday Sunday despite an early spring snowstorm.
“I wasn’t sure what the scene would be and I would have hated to be fourth or fifth,” said Sa’d, a cannabis lawyer.
The Hunny Pot features four storeys with hardwood floors, glass display cases full of bongs and vaporizers, and jars full of different cannabis strains that customers can sniff. A group of iPad-carrying employees wearing branded black T-shirts led the first customers through the store, answering questions and offering recommendations.
